ST. JAMES CHURCH
Location: Lothian Road, Kashmere Gate, Delhi
It is one of the oldest churches of the city which was built in 1836 by Colonel James Skinner. It was attended by the Viceroy of India until 1931. This pale yellow structure is an excellent example of Palladian architecture. Its design elements include porticoed porches, big octagonal dome and a cruciform plan. It also contains number of large and beautiful stained glass windows and art by painter Pompeo Girolamo Batoni. Its dome resembles the dome of the Florence Church of Italy. The rear end of the church has the tomb of Thomas Metcalfe.
SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL
Location: 1, Ashok Place, Sector 4, Gole Market, New Delhi.
It is Delhi’s largest Roman Catholic Cathedral, spread over 14 acres of land in the heart of the city. The church has an Italian architecture and was designed by a British architect Henry Medd. An important feature of this structure is its white pillars that are holding up the canopy. Other features include circular arcaded turrets. The altar is entirely made up of pure white marble. A bronze statue of Pope John Paul-II standing at the entrance of the cathedral was donated by the Ambassador of Republic of Monaco. There is a large fresco behind the marble altar depicting the Last Supper. The cathedral observes Holy Mass everyday in morning and evening along with several other yearly functions and festivals.
CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH
Location: Chandni Chowk Road, Chandni Chowk, New Delhi
It is located to just opposite Gurudwara Sisganj Sahib and exhibits an excellent example of European style of architecture. This church was established in 1814 and is claimed to be the oldest Christian Mission in the entire North India. The most intriguing aspect of this church is that it has inscriptions only in Urdu. Another noteworthy feature of this church are the plaques that have been put up on its walls, commemorating the service of its various members. The oldest plaque dates back to 1857. All in all, the church has been perfectly maintained with its original motifs and intricate carvings.
CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF REDEMPTION
Location: Church Road, 1, North Avenue, New Delhi
This is a Protestant Church which is also known as Viceroy Church and was built between 1927-1931. An amazing feature of this church is that it was built in such a way that even in extreme summers, it remains cool and pleasant. The main front dome resembles a birthday cake, with a candle on top. It is built of white Dholpur stone whereas the roof and plinths are made of red sandstone.
CENTENARY METHODIST CHURCH
Location: 24, Lodhi Road, Pragati Vihar, New Delhi
It is one of the popular Christian shrines in Delhi and is spread over 1.27 acres of land. The Church provides a Sanctuary, Parish hall and the educational unit for Sunday school. It was established in the year 1956 and has been more than just a place of worship. They set up stalls and fairs around the year to engage with the community. The church has lovely square windows with glass paintings on them that shine brilliantly when sunlight falls on them.
