With the “Hallyu” craze [literally meaning Korean wave] at its peak, thanks to K-pop groups like BTS and Blackpink, Korean dramas have become immensely popular among people around the globe. With engaging and relatable storylines, well-suited actors and feel good OSTs, they are a perfect anytime watch for the pandemic-bored audience.

Here are my most recommended K-dramas that will definitely get you hooked.

  1. DESCENDENTS OF THE SUN

Considered one of the best K-dramas of all time, this one is a full package of comedy, romance, action and loads of emotions. Starring two of the most successful actors in the industry, Song Joong-ki as Yoo Shi Jin [leader of Special Forces unit] and Song Hye-kyo as Kang Mo Yeon [surgeon], it depicts the difficulties they face due to their varying professions and conflicting core beliefs. The highlight of this series was the beautiful cinematography. Surprisingly, this series is credited for increasing Korean tourism.

Where to watch: Netflix and Rakuten Viki.

  1. WEIGHTLIFTING FAIRY KIM BOK-JOO

A cheerful and God-gifted weightlifter Kim Bok-joo [Lee Sung Kyung] and a talented swimmer Joon Hyung [Nam Joo Hyuk], who suffers from trauma, struggle to achieve their dreams. Both friendship and romance are treated with sensitivity and good humor in this light-hearted drama that is marathon-worthy.

Where to watch: Netflix and We TV.

  1. STRONG WOMAN DO BONG SOON

Centered on Do Bong Soon [played by Park Bo Young] who has inherited superhuman strength passed on generation after generation to the women in her family, this show is a treat to watch. Hired as a bodyguard to the rich CEO of Gaming Company Ahn Min-hyuk [played by Park Hyung-Sik], they both try to solve a kidnapping case. The highlight of this drama is the perfect comic timing of the lead couple as well as the supporting cast.

Where to watch: Netflix and Rakuten Viki.

  1. SEARCH:WWW

One of my personal favorites, this one showcases three strong-headed women – Bae Ta-Mi, Cha Hyeon and Song Ga-kyeong [starring Imm Soo-jung, Lee Da-hee and Jeon Hye-jin respectively] – working in the two competitive web portal companies: Unicon and Barro. It’s not only women-centric but work-centric as well, with the three female leads having their own perfectly matched love interests; yet their love lives are depicted as only an aspect and not taking the centre stage. Thoughtfully written and directed and extremely well acted, this show is an absolute delight.

Where to watch: Netflix, We TV and Rakuten Viki.

  1. WHAT’S WRONG WITH SECRETARY KIM?

A typical Rom-Com showcasing a self absorbed Vice President, Lee Yeong Joon and an almost-perfect Secretary Kim Mi So. Starring two of the most popular Korean actors, Park Seo Joon and Park Min Young, the show became extremely popular worldwide due to their heart-fluttering chemistry. This light-hearted drama with loads of comedy that will leave you in splits.

Where to watch: Netflix, We TV and Rakuten Viki.

In addition to these, there are many more TV series that are as interesting as the ones listed above. Just a warning, these shows are so engaging that you’re gonna wanna finish them in one go. Get ready to experience a whole new culture, with stories that feel very much our own.
