Rajon ki Baoli- A Step into History at Mehrauli Archaeological Park

Date

Rajon ki Baoli was made in 1506 during the Lodi era. It is also called the ‘Rajon-ki-bain’. It is not clear who built it, but it is believed that it was made by Daulat Khan. Architectural techniques and trends of the Lodi era are too prevalent in this structure. An interesting fact is that it did not get this name from its association with kings. This name ‘Rajon’ is derived from ‘rajbirs’ or ‘mistris’. The term was used for masons and got this name in the 20th century. It came to be known by this name because masons made deserted mosques their home and started living here.

In this monument, the point of attraction is the Boali or stepwell. The structure around boali is multi-story. If we look at it from a distance then it doesn’t look multi-storeyed, because three storeys are below the ground level. The structure has twelve pillared verandahs and arches of north Indian style. Because of the presence of water in baoli, this structure remains cool even during the daytime of Delhi’s summers. This was the reason behind its construction. There are alcoves in the walls that can be used in the nighttime for burning lamps.
