Why visit this library
We all know the role of various leaders to end colonial rule in India. What we overlook is the role played by books and knowledge that made them think critically. In this way libraries also have a prominent role in bringing independence to our nation. There were various libraries functioning during the colonial period. Dyal Singh Public library was established in Lahore in 1928, but after the partition, it was established in Delhi in 1954. In establishing this library in Delhi, Dewan Anand Kumar put a lot of effort. At present, the library is home to 40,000 books, mainly in Hindi, English, Urdu and Punjabi.
How to get a membership
The historical texts and vast collection of nationally and internationally reputed books journals will increase your interest a lot. This love for books and the library will lead to becoming a member of the Dyal Singh Public library. There are two types of membership offered by them. Forms for both are available on the website. To avail of free membership, you need to submit the filled form, which has the recommendation of the responsible public member with your identity proof. In paid membership also you have to follow the above-mentioned process but also need to give residence proof along with fees.
Membership fees
As you know, two kinds of memberships are offered by the library. One is Reference Membership and the second is Lending Membership. Reference membership is free of cost. In this, you have to use library resources inside the library only and can not borrow books. For lending membership, people have to pay Rs. 500 as a refundable security deposit. These members will be issued eight borrower tickets. One can borrow a maximum of 4 books and 4 back issue magazines/periodicals for two weeks.
Location and timings
This library is run by Dyal Singh Library Trust Society. After the partition of India and Pakistan, it was brought by Dewan Anand Kumar in Delhi and established on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg. People can reach the library very easily through public transport. The nearest metro station is ITO, Pragati Maidan and the nearest bus stop is ITO. The library remains open six days a week. Timings are 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM every day except Sundays and gazetted holidays. On Sundays and gazetted holidays, it remains closed.
