Is Priyanka Gandhi the Game Changer for UP Elections?

It would be fair to say ‘Hawaa badal rahi hai’ when we look at the recent campaigning effort of Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is seemingly becoming a strong candidate and the game-changer for the upcoming UP elections. It comes as a breath of fresh air with Mrs Gandhi taking up crucial issues of unemployment, women empowerment, development, etc. and is urging the youth to consider these issues before voting in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

‘Ladki Hun Lad Sakti Hun’

Echoing women empowerment and upliftment, Priyanka Gandhi’s new campaign ‘Ladki Hun Lad Sakti Hun’ was launched to attract female voters and has promised to give 40 per cent of tickets to women candidates in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh polls. 

In an interview with News18, Priyanka Gandhi said,

“Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor were brothers in the movie. Amitabh asks Shashi Kapoor, ‘mere paas gaddi hai, mere paas bungalow hai, yeh hai, woh hai, toh Shashi Kapoor ne kahan mere paas maa hai. Toh main keh rahin hun mere paas behen hai (my sisters are with me),” 

Powerful Women Reaping the Benefits of the 40 per cent Promise

  1. Asha Singh (Unnao)
    The mother of Unnao rape victim, Asha Singh went through a lot of troubles from losing a daughter to the horrifying incident of which an ex-BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted and was sentenced to life imprisonment to also losing her husband who was killed by the same convict. 
  2. Archana Gautam (Hastinapur)
    Archana Gautam has bagged the Hastinapur (SC reserved) seat. She is a prominent actress and model who has done her graduation in journalism and mass communication from the IIMT, Meerut.

  3. Sadaf Jaffar (Lucknow Central)
    Sadaf Jaffar is an actor-turned activist who was arrested in December 2019 while doing a live Facebook session during a protest against the CAA-NRC.
  4. Poonam Pandey (Shahjahanpur)
    Poonam Pandey is an ASHA worker who was handled roughly along with other protestors who were going for a protest march to current UP CM, Yogi Adityanath’s Lucknow residence last year.
  5. Ritu Singh (Lakhimpur Kheri)
    A former SP worker, Ritu Singh who charged that one of her election proposers were manhandled by a section of men to thwart her bid to file nomination. She had accused some BJP workers of allegedly tearing the clothes of her supporters in a bid to stop them from becoming her proposers. (Source: Indian Express)
