A 1.75-acre Heritage Garden to come up in Old Delhi

Date

A heritage park is set to come up in the walled city by the end of this year. The work has been intensified on this project spreading over 1.75 acres next to the parade ground parking lot. The heritage garden will symbolize the rich culture and history of Old Delhi, facing Red Fort on one side and Jama Masjid on the other.

The park will be inspired by Mughal-era architecture, made in red and white sandstone and marble. It will be divided into parts – one consisting of a plaza, sitting area, amphitheatre, fountain and landscaped courts, and the other consisting of a huge lawn covered with interlocking tiles. It will also feature a standing canopy for visitors to relax, in addition to the installation of iron lamp posts and fancy lights.

The park will add to the charm of the walled city, and will give further reason to people to make a visit. Heritage and food enthusiasts crowding the lanes of Old Delhi and visiting the Red Fort will now be able to enjoy light and sound shows, stalls and programs at this new place. They will also be able to relax in the lawns planted with indigenous species such as amaltas, peepal and banyan.

The project was conceived two years ago, when a park in front of Red Fort was decided to be converted into an expansive heritage garden, and has resumed post lockdown. The project is under development by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation. A deadline of six months has been set to finish the project and we might see the Heritage Park by then end of this year.
