The Shish Gumbad is also known also as the glass dome. It got this name because in earlier times the tomb and some parts of the central part of the structure were covered with coloured glazed tiles. We do not know a fixed date or year when it was made. It is believed that it was constructed sometime between 1489 to 1517. There are a lot of tombs in this Gumbad. Historians are not able to reach any consensus that these tombs belong to which family. Some people argue that these tombs belong to the first Lodi emperor Bahlul Lodi and his family.
We do not know the exact time period of the construction of this monument. But one thing is very clear that it is the structure of the Lodi time period. This can be seen from the architectural pattern. The Shish Gumbad is a square structure. The square structure is a prominent feature of Lodi architecture. All three walls have openings to reach the interior and the western wall has mihrab. Apart from doorways, every wall contains two open arches so that light and air can enter the premises. The central tomb chamber is also a square structure and has a lot of tombs. It also has another prominent architectural feature, that it seems to be a two-storeyed structure.
