In 1912, when it was decided to shift the capital from Kolkata to Delhi, the Temporary Secretariat building was constructed. Till 1911, the legislative council meetings were used to be held in the Government House, Calcutta and, with the transfer of capital, the construction of a new building was inevitable. Designed by the architect E. Montague Thomas, the building boasts of a long frontline and two lateral structures. The artistic marvel is curvature given to this, which seems like a crescent moon in the centre. The first official sitting of the Legislative Council was held at the chamber in Old Secretariat on 27th January 1913. This building is just not a timestamp for the politics, but for the budding scholars also, as it was the very place where the first Convocation of the University of Delhi on 26th March 1923 was held. Now as we all know, the Old secretariat presently houses the Delhi Vidhan Sabha.
