World Heritage week was founded in 1945 so that the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind can be developed. It was tried that by celebrating this week lasting peace can be built in the world. The devastating effects of the two world wars forced all nations to think in this direction. By 1945 it became very clear to UNESCO that it is very important to make people aware of the importance of heritage. Thus one of the broad motives behind the celebration of world heritage week is to make people aware of the rich heritage and also strive for its preservation.
In India, various kinds of activities and events took place at different levels between 19-25 November. Different types of events and programs were organized by the Archeological Survey of India and various museums of the country. In schools and college quiz, painting and heritage tours took place this week. India has 38 UNESCO World heritage sites. At times the government also makes some announcements to highlight the importance of historical monuments. Like this year entry to all the centrally preserved monuments was made free on the first day (19th November) of World Heritage Week. In Delhi monuments like Qutub Minar, Red Fort and Delhi Darwaza are celebrated this week. One should definitely visit historical monuments to understand the history, culture and architecture of India.
