The First Arch in India: Tomb of Balban

Balban was the last and ninth ruler of the Slave dynasty. He ascended the throne in 1266 but was a prominent figure since 1246. His rule is marked with the beginning of a strong centralized government in the subcontinent. His madness for power is reflected by many instances such as him poisoning his cousin for opposing him. He was a great ruler, warrior, and statesman. However, his two sons were not able to keep the power in their hands and Khalji took over. He was buried in this tomb in 1287.

It is the first monument to be built in the Indo-Islamic architectural style. One can also find the tomb of Balban’s son Mahmud, nearby. Persian calligraphy work has been done on the tomb of Mehmud. The tomb of Balban represents the first true arch of India. The circular arch was brought by the Mamluks to India. Currently, this structure is in a debilitating condition. Walls have fallen apart. These structures are not getting the required attention, care and protection. Still, the square gateway of the tomb vicinity has stood still and survived the fight against climate and negligence.
