Stories of South Campus Roads

Date

People of Delhi are very fond of the north campus of Delhi University. Though I want to say that the south campus is also not behind in any way from the north campus. The royalty and richness of Delhi can be witnessed here only. What is more interesting is the names and the stories of those roads. But what surprised me more is that most people do not know much about these personalities. So here are stories of some of the roads of the south campus and nearby areas.

San Martin Marg

There is a road named San Martin Marg, which is used by the people to reach Maitreyi College and Jesus and Mary College from the metro station of the south campus. As we all know that it lies in Lutyen’s Delhi so generally, people thought that this person must be a colonial officer. While after knowing the full story you will come to know that this is not the case. This road is named after the hero of Argentina. The full name of San Martin is Jose De San Martin. Popularly he is known as the ‘Saint of Swords’. San Martin is the one who freed and liberated a part of the Spanish people. The highest award of Argentina is also named after him.

Rao Tula Ram Marg

Near Moti Lal Nehru College this road is located. He is an unforgotten hero of our country. History is a vast subject, there are a lot of people who fought and gave their lives to this country and its people, but only some popular ones were known by the people. There are various such heroes like Rao Tula Ram who really do a lot for this nation. He was a warrior of 1857 mutiny from Haryana. Rao captured some government buildings in Rewari during this time and declared himself king. Resources, army and arms were built by him from scratch and provided help to the Mughal emperor. He fought very bravely against British officials.

Benito Juarez Marg

The beauty of Delhi’s roads is that they are not only named after Indian personalities, or ancient and medieval kings or colonial officers but they are named after the heroes of other countries as well. Yes, you are thinking right this person Benito Juarez is an international figure. He is a very well known President of Mexico. During the grave situation of 1861-62, it led the country very well. They defeated the French army under his leadership. This road which is named after him is used by the people to reach South Campus. The Embassy of Mexico is also situated on this road and as respect, it is named after Benito Juarez who was the 26th President of Mexico.
