Stories of JNU Roads

Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University are well known for their intelligence, critical thinking and voice out against wrong things. When our focus and goals are pretty high, we unknowingly neglect some of the things which are used by us on a daily basis. Nobody has time to hear out what things like our roads want to tell us. Most of us do not think that roads also want to tell us some story or give us some important information. Let us see what the roads of JNU want to tell us.

Aruna Asraf Ali Road

It is a very long road connecting Olofo Palme Marg and Vasant Kunj Road. This road is used by people to reach various places, institutions, offices and monuments. From this, you must have understood the role of this road. But the personality after whom this road is named is much more important. This lady was an Indian educator, political activist, publisher and an active participant of the Indian freedom movement. Aruna Asraf Ali is known for hoisting Tricolour at the Gowalia Tank Maidan during Quit India Movement. She was a leftist and became the first woman mayor of Delhi in 1958.

Dr. C.V. Raman Marg

This road is mostly used by the students and people who want to reach different departments of JNU. We may not give more importance to the

names of the roads but they are named after thinking a lot. Like this road used to reach university, thus named after a personality like Dr. C.V. Raman, who is a well-known physicist. Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman is known for his work in the field of light scattering. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics and honoured with the highest civilian award of India, Bharat Ratna.

Nelson Mandela Marg

The beauty of India is that we appreciate everyone and try to learn from others as well. This is one of the reasons why our roads are also named after some of the international personalities. Nelson Mandela Marg is a very long, busy and grand road. He was the first president of South Africa. His role in the anti-apartheid movement can not be forgotten. Mandela was inspired a lot by Mahatma Gandhi. He was honoured by various countries for his constant peaceful struggle. In 1993 Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. India also awarded him with Bharat Ratna in 1990.
