Do you know about the goldmine of books? The Sahitya Akademi Library is that place. This place has books in 24 regional languages of India, which are recognized by Sahitya Akademi. It consists of a special collection of the works of Rabindranath Tagore, Mahatma Gandhi and Sri Aurobindo. There is a section of books that were donated by Prof. Gopi Chand Narang. One can find here material on the themes like Indian and World literature, Art, Religion, Philosophy and Culture. Those who are in search of a huge and enriched collection of literary theories and criticism, cultural histories, women’s studies, and translation studies.

How to get a membership

The library can be accessed by registered members only. The membership procedure is offline in this library system. The process is not very complicated. To become a member one needs to take the membership form from the circulation counter or you can download it from the website as well. They offer two kinds of memberships: student and general public membership. Students who are in M.A., M.Phil. or PhD can apply under the student category and their form needs to be attested by the head of the department. The general public needs to attach residence and identity proof with a form. Submit this form on the circulation counter with money to get a membership.

Membership fees

Members can use many facilities in the library. Spending money on such places will never disappoint you. They can borrow two books for the time period of one month. Sitting facilities in the reading room and reference services are given to them. Members can also use the internet facility of the library. You also need not worry about the reprographic services as well. To obtain a membership you have to pay a refundable security fee of Rs. 2000. Apart from this, temporary membership of 15 days can also get in Rs. 100. Though temporary members can not borrow books.

Location and timings

The wonderful and vast treasure of books is supervised by Sahitya Akademi New Delhi. Its head office is in Delhi. They also have regional offices in Kolkata, Bangalore, and Mumbai. The address of the Delhi unit is 35, Rabindra Bhavan, Firoz Shah Road, Rabindra Nagar, Copernicus Marg, New Delhi. The library remains open from Monday to Saturday every week. One can visit there between 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the aforementioned days. On Sundays and gazetted holidays, it remains closed.
