St. Mary’s Orthodox Cathedral Hauz Khas

Prior to independence there were very few Syrian Christians outside Kerala. While the opening up of opportunities of employment, after the middle of the last century, Keralites started going out in a search of employment not only in their familiar world of commerce but also mostly in professional and government service.


It is the first place of worship for the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in Delhi. The beginning of the parish was in 1942 by forming a congregation by father Mathews. The parish was declared as the St. Mary’s orthodox Cathedral in 1979. The mother parish has helped in and witnessed the growth of several parishes in and around Delhi during the last five decades. The Cathedral played a prominent part in raising resources and building the Orthodox Centre.


A yearlong golden jubilee celebrations were slated for December 2001 to December 2002. Blessing of all houses in the parish, providing financial assistance of Rs. 25000 each to 50 deserving girls for meeting their marriage expenses, an inaugural public meeting on 16th December 2001 which was graced by out Catholics and the Catholic designate and attended by inter-religious leaders, seminars and finally conferences, two fetes and release of Souvenir were among the highlights of the year long celebrations.
