Modernist Marvels of Delhi: Statesman House
When we think of Delhi’s skyline, images of domes, forts, and colonial colonnades come to mind. But Delhi is also home to striking modernist architecture that reshaped the city in the late 20th century. One of the most iconic examples is Statesman House — a circular, tiered office tower that still dominates Connaught Place.
A Landmark of the 1980s
Developed by The Statesman Ltd. and completed in 1983, Statesman House was envisioned as a bold architectural statement for a transforming India. Standing 72 metres tall with 17 floors and three basements for parking, the building quickly became one of the most recognisable features of Connaught Place.
Its circular plan with receding tiers set it apart from the box-like towers of the time. The sandstone façade added a timeless, almost classical character, making the structure feel like a blend of the old and the new.
The Approval Saga
The story of Statesman House is not without controversy. Although construction began in the early 1980s, official approval from the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) came only in 1989.
The initial objections were linked to fire-safety measures and concerns over traffic congestion in the area. However, reports suggest that delays may have been politically motivated, with critics pointing to strained relations between the government and The Statesman newspaper, known for its critical reporting.
Architecture and Facilities
Designed by architects including Hafeez Contractor, Ballardie & Thompson, and Ansal, the building remains an excellent example of Grade A office space in Delhi.
