Madrasa-e-Firoz Shahi

Date

The madrasa is located in the southeastern corner of Hauz Khas. It was constructed by Firoz Shah near the royal tank. This tank was initially made by Alauddin Khalji but it was restored by Firoz Shah during his rule. Firoz Shah is generally known for the restoration of the ancient and old structures made by other rulers. It was a very popular and prestigious madrasa during those times. The importance of the structure increased because this site was chosen by Firoz Shah for his tomb.

The higher education institution, ‘Madrasa-e-Firoz Shahi’ or College of Firoz Shah is endowed by the emperor himself. Its beauty can be imagined from the description of contemporary visitors. The building is made in L-shape. Rooms were constructed in a way that a nice and mesmerizing view of the water reservoir can be seen very easily. There are two types of rooms we can see, open pillared rooms on the top storey and arcaded rooms in the lower storey. Rubble masonry in combination with the blocks of finely cut quartzite was used for the construction. The building was ornamented by plasterwork and carving.
