Kali Gumti | Hidden Monuments of Delhi

Date

There are possibilities that it belongs to the Tughlaq or Sayyid era. But there are other people who argue that the monument is of the Lodi era and was built in the 14th century. It got this name because of the material used in it, which turns it black in colour. Kali Gumti stands in the deer park. What is the actual purpose behind the construction of this structure is not clear. Though there are assumptions that it was a tomb initially. This argument remains vague because it does not contain any grave. Small buildings in natural black colour are covered with vegetation and look so beautiful and astonishing.

The point of attraction in this monument is the black colour. It is so because the structure is covered with traditional organic mortar. In this mortar, many materials were used like cow dung, lentils, fenugreek, yoghurt, etc. This allows the mortar to breathe, which gives a prolonging life to the building. One can enter it from three sides, though there is no entrance on the western side. Entrances of north, east and south contain arched doorways. Rest it is a simple and plain building.

It will be a wonderful experience to feel these historical monuments amidst greenery! Join us on our Hauz Khas Heritage Walk this Sunday (24th October).
