Heritage Walk: Awadh Ki Shaam

Date

What: Heritage Walk through Safdarjung’s Tomb
When: 4th April 2020
Time: 4:00 PM

With the fall of the Mughal empire, a flicker of power rose in the doabs of Ganges. The Kingdom of Awadh/Oudh was established and was the last of the glorious empires of Northern India. It was founded by Nawab Sadat Ali Khan, who infamously sided with the Persian Warlord Nadir Shah, and it ended with one of the greatest connoisseurs of Art of the 19th Century, Wajid Ali Shah.

Set in the heart of Delhi, the little known tomb is a testimony to both the influence that Safdarjung wielded in the rapidly disintegrating empire as well as to the power that Nobles possessed. While the Emperors were being buried alongside Sufis in the Dargah, a Noble made such a magnificent tomb.
