Delhi Police claims that farmers violated many conditions that were agreed upon previously: they started the parade earlier than scheduled and resorted to violence and vandalism. The farmers also ventured on routes beyond the permissible areas and stormed the red fort, following which the police took to lathi charge and attack by tear gas.

One of the protestors died as the tractor he was driving turned over after hitting something, many claim that he was earlier attacked with tear gas and therefore lost balance. After some struggle, the protestors were able to reclaim the body from the police, whereafter he was wrapped in a tricolor and surrounded by grieving protestors.

More than 70 protesting farmers have died in the last two months at the sites.
