Dwarka Expressway (Delhi Section): How the ₹5,360-Crore Corridor Aims to Transform Your Daily Commute
Traffic-choked roads and endless jams have long been part of Delhi’s daily routine — especially for those travelling between the Capital and Gurugram. The newly inaugurated Delhi stretch of the Dwarka Expressway, however, promises to be a big leap forward in easing NCR’s traffic burden. Here’s everything you need to know about this much-anticipated project.
🚧 What Is the Dwarka Expressway?
The Dwarka Expressway is a 29 km long access-controlled highway designed as an alternative to the heavily congested NH-48 (Delhi-Gurugram Expressway). It aims to divert a large volume of daily traffic, particularly airport-bound and intercity travellers, away from the already saturated Outer Ring Road and Mahipalpur corridor.
Delhi Section Snapshot
-
Length: 10.1 km
-
Cost: ₹5,360 crore
-
Objective: To provide faster, smoother access between Delhi and Gurugram while reducing choke points near Dhaula Kuan, Shiv Murti, and the airport road.
Multi-Modal Connectivity Boost
This expressway isn’t just about cars: it integrates multiple modes of transport to improve last-mile connectivity for commuters. It directly links to:
-
-
Yashobhoomi (IICC) Convention Centre
-
Delhi Metro’s Blue & Orange Lines
-
Future Bijwasan Railway Station
-
Dwarka Cluster Bus Depot
-
Delhi’s NEW 3rd Ring Road
UER-II = a full 75.7 km corridor acting as Delhi’s Third Ring Road.
It connects Mahipalpur (near IGI Airport) to Alipur, linking major expressways going towards Haryana & Punjab.
Why Delhiites Should Care
Say bye to traffic jams at Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan & Outer Ring Road.
These new highways will reduce travel time, ease congestion & make airport access faster for Sonipat, Bahadurgarh, Gurugram travellers.
Delhi Route Breakdown
To ensure smooth functioning, the corridor has been divided into two main packages:
| Package | Stretch Length | Route |
|---|---|---|
| Package I | 5.9 km | Shiv Murti → Dwarka Sector-21 (Road-Under-Bridge) |
| Package II | 4.2 km | Dwarka Sector-21 → Delhi-Haryana Border (connects to UER-II) |
The adjoining 19 km Haryana section was inaugurated earlier in March 2024 — and with the Delhi arm now live, commuters will be able to use the corridor end-to-end.
✨ Why It Matters to Delhiites
-
Reduces congestion on NH-48, Outer Ring Road and airport corridor
-
Improves travel time between Delhi, Gurugram, Sonipat, Bahadurgarh, and airport terminals
-
Supports NCR growth, boosting real-estate, logistics, warehousing and retail
-
Offers future readiness, with connectivity to the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and five other national expressways
🚦 What’s Next?
With an eye on rapid urbanisation and increasing vehicle density, this project is expected to usher in a major shift in how Delhi-NCR travels. The real test, however, lies in how effectively it decongests existing roads in the months ahead.
