Delhi’s Haunted Baoli: Agrasen Ki Baoli

Date

Perfectly hidden from view, surrounded by towers, yet just around the corner from the heart of Delhi Connaught Place, Agrasen ki Baoli is one of many heritage sights in Delhi. Be it a short trip or an extended vacation, you can always take some time out to visit this monument. It is a stepwell that measures 60 meters long and 15 meters wide comprising 104 steps. A short walk from the famous tourist site ‘Jantar Mantar’ would lead you to this picturesque place.

The word baoli or baori is derived from the Sanskrit word Wapi which means a stepwell. These wells were constructed to overcome the scarcity of water and used as storage space. The construction of Agrasen ki Baoli is commonly attributed to the pre-Lodi Raja Agrasen, ruler of the Agrawal community in the 14th century. It is a relatively simple structure, consisting of a single flight of 103 steps that culminate in a now dry water tank. The stone walls of the well are stark yet beautiful. One should explore the ruins of the mosque at the southwest end of the well. The best time to visit the Agrasen Ki Baoli is during the winters.
