Delhi’s 1000-year-old Lake gets a New Lease on Life

Date

Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has been ordered by the Union Minister of State for Culture and Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal to begin conservation work on the Anang Tal Lake situated near Jogmaya Temple in Mehrauli. Following the restoration of this indispensable natural and cultural heritage site, Anang Tal will be set to be declared a monument of national importance.

The Anang Tal is a manmade reservoir tank built by the Tomar King, Anangpal II, who also established the first city in Delhi, Lal Kot. this reservoir is thus, one of the initial signifiers of urban habitation in Delhi. The water from this lake was used by Alauddin Khilji in 1296-1316 AD, during the construction of  Qutub minar and the extension of Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque.

Hopefully, the new conservation project and national monument status will help to restore the lake to its original glory.
