Coronation Park | Off The Grid Dilli

Date

Welcome to “Off the Grid Dilli.” Today, we explore a hidden gem of Delhi, Coronation Park, which stands as a unique testament to India’s colonial past.

A Green Oasis with Historical Significance

Situated near Burari Road and Model Town, Coronation Park is a verdant expanse filled with the history of the British Raj. The park offers free entry, and visitors are greeted by a large Indian tricolour flag at the entrance. Paved pathways and beautiful lawns lead the way through Mughal-styled sandstone pavilions, creating a royal ambiance.

A Gateway to the Past

The name “Coronation Park” evokes memories of the days when three British monarchs were crowned as rulers of India. In 1877, after the British quashed the first freedom struggle known as the Indian Rebellion, Queen Victoria was declared the Empress of India in a grand ceremony. This tradition continued with the coronations of Edward VII in 1903 and George V in 1911, where it was also announced that the capital would shift from Kolkata to Delhi.

Relics of the British Raj

In the 1960s, marble statues of George V and various British viceroys were relocated from New Delhi to this park. The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has proposed plans to preserve these artifacts and develop the park. At the heart of Coronation Park stands a Coronation Memorial, an imposing sandstone obelisk surrounded by steps. This memorial marks the exact location of the three British Durbars and commemorates King George V’s 1911 announcement with an inscription.

A Blend of Serenity and Festivity

Although its peaceful and somewhat secluded environment contrasts with the bustling city outside, Coronation Park occasionally comes alive with large religious festivals, bridging the gap between its colonial past and contemporary urban life. A visit to this park feels like stepping into a story, where every corner exudes a sense of history and heritage.

A Sanctuary of Calm

Today, Delhiites find solace in the tranquility of Coronation Park. It offers a momentary escape from the city’s chaos, allowing visitors to connect with their city’s history. The serene atmosphere provides a perfect backdrop for reflection and relaxation, making it a cherished retreat.
