ATHPULA BRIDGE- THE MUGHAL MARVEL OF LODI GARDENS

Date

Athpula Bridge is a structure of Akbar’s reign. It was made by Nawab Bahadur, a nobleman of emperor Akbar. The importance of this bridge is more because it is one of the rare monuments of the reign of Akbar that survive in Delhi. The bridge has eight piers and seven arches. These piers support arches and are around 2m thick. The space in the middle arch is more and it keeps on decreasing when we move towards the bank from the centre. The total length of the bridge is 40m. It was made on one of the tributaries of river Yamuna. Though it gets drained later on and now the river is replaced by a man-made reservoir. One can see the rise of the octagonal minaret from the middle of each pier. The stones of this octagonal minaret were dressed in plaster. It was known as the Khairpur ka Pul in earlier times.
