What: Heritage Walk and Breakfast, From Old Delhi to Firoz Shah Kotla
When: Saturday, 20th February, 2021
Hello fellow Delhi-lovers!
Welcome to Delhipedia’s Heritage Walks! This upcoming Saturday, we are going on a tour of one of the older cities of Delhi. We are talking about Firozabad, and several structures around it. Delhi is an amalgamation of several eras and histories, and we will walk through quite a few of them.
In this 3-hour walking tour led by Ibrar, you will explore the wall of Shahjahanabad and walk through structures that lay in between the two cities. We will then explore Firozabad, built by Feroz Shah Tughlaq in the 14th century. A passionate builder, Tughlaq built several lodges, mosques and reservoirs around the city. Some of these structures still stand and speak intriguing tales that go beyond the physical to the supernatural.
Itinerary:-
1. The walk will begin at 11:00 a.m. from the Ghata Masjid at Daryaganj. An interesting monument, it resembles the Jama Masjid but is much smaller in size.
2. Post our visit, we would savour the very famous Bedmi Puri of Delhi, and walk through Daryaganj to try some of the most mouth-watering North Indian Breakfast options in Daryaganj, exploring foods such as Chhole-Puri, Falooda etc. Delicious non-veg options are also available.
3. Afterwards, we will reach the area where the walls of Shahjahanabad are still visible.
4. From Daryaganj we will reach the Delhi gate which was once the gateway leading outside Shahjahanabad.
5. We would then visit the Khooni Darwaza, a Suri dynasty structure with a bloody history.
6. Right next to it would be the city or Firozabad, now known as Firoz Shah Kotla. Built by Firoz Shah Tughlaq this city is now in ruins and a supposed abode for Djinns. Kindly do not buy a ticket, it is already included in your Walk Fees.
7. We will visit one after the other different structures inside the complex, including an Ashokan Pillar, a Baoli and much more.
Our walk will include stories of the city and its fort and how it became a template for the Mughals to construct their structures.
We will also talk about the myths around the presence of Djinns and what makes the place ruinous yet beautiful.
Duration: 3 hrs
