HERITAGE WALK: EXPLORING THE MEHRAULI ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK

Date

What: Heritage Walk through Mehrauli Archaeological Park

When: Sunday, September 12, 2021

Timings: 4 p.m.

Registration Link: https://rzp.io/l/8QfOn7u

One of the oldest inhabited places in the subcontinent, Mehrauli is rich in historical ruins, tombs and other monuments from many eras of Delhi’s past —from the pre-Islamic to the late Mughal and colonial period. This trail will take you through a thrilling journey accompanied by an interesting session of storytelling around the history and myths of one of Delhi’s oldest cities.

In this 3-hour walking tour led by Shah Umair, you will explore parts of Mehrauli hidden from the crowds at Qutub Minar, walking through the history of almost a thousand years.

Itinerary:

1. Meet at 4 p.m. in front of Jamali Kamali Car Parking.

Please do not buy a ticket as we will be going to the Mehrauli Archaeological Park from here, NOT into the Qutub Complex itself. We will leave this area at 4 pm sharp. In case of late arrival and direction guidance, please contact +91 9958099050 (Tanya Sujan).

2. Dilkusha/Quli Khan’s tomb: A 16th-century Mughal tomb, used as a summer residence by Thomas Metcalfe.

3. Metcalfe Poolhouse: More remains of the Metcalfe summer residence.

4. Jamali Kamali: The earliest Mughal tomb in Delhi, this 16th-century complex is infamous for being haunted by djinns. Sufi saints are said to have found great resonance with the place. This complex now has a rather absurd dual identity as both a haunted spot and an icon for the city’s LGBTQ community.

5. Rajon Ki Baoli: The oldest and one of the finest step wells of Delhi.

6. Qutbuddin Dargah: The oldest dargah in Delhi, to whose saint the Qutub Minar is dedicated and named.

7. Zafar Mahal: If there is time we shall also explore Zafar Mahal, the summer palace of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor. This palace was the last monumental structure built by the Mughals.

Duration: 3 hrs
