The Government of Delhi led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced new measures on Tuesday to provide relief to the many families struggling with the brutal second wave of Covid-19 that has engulfed the city. The lockdown has broken the common man financially, leaving them with little to no livelihood. In many cases, the situation has been made worse by the death of a family member, sometimes the breadwinner; the measures come as a relief in these desperate times.

The Chief Minister announced on Tuesday an ex-gratia of Rs.50,000 to families in Delhi that have lost a family member to Covid-19. In addition to the ex-gratia amount, a pension of Rs.2,500 will be given to families that have lost the breadwinner of the family to Covid-19.

“If the husband dies, the pension will be given to the wife, if the wife dies it will be given to the husband. If an unmarried person dies, the pension will be given to her or his parents,” Kejriwal said.

For children who have lost one or both parents to Covid-19, the Delhi Government will provide a pension amount of Rs.2,500 till the age of 25 years. Additionally, their education will be borne by the state, free of cost.

The government will also provide 10kg ration free of cost to ration card holders and non-ration card holders. “There are 72 lakh ration card holders in Delhi and they are given 5 kg ration by the government every month. This month, the ration will be given free of cost. Besides this, an additional 5 kg free ration is being given by the Centre, so they’re being given 10 kg free ration this month,” Kejriwal said.

The National Capital has recorded 4,482 fresh cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, while the positivity rate has dropped on Monday, when Delhi recorded 4,524 cases, lowest since April 5.
